Grasse under the smoke of garden fires When we moved to France, we were amazed how many garden fires we saw and smelled!

Historically garden cuttings were burned in large garden fires. This tradition is still tolerated, even that people live now very densely and the smoke causes environmental damage, health risk and is a nuisance of neighbors.

Grasse under the smoke of garden firesIn other countries this habit is forbidden since many years. Here, the government does not do much about it; only in the hot summer months, it is forbidden because of risking wild fires. The exact dates vary between community to community. The gardening waste can be brought to the local recycling centers (déchetterie) for free. In some communities the yard waste is collected.

A very good tool to reduce your garden waste, not annoying your neighbors with noise is a strong, but slow turning (hence silent) Woodchipper (Broyeur silencieux) from Bosch:

Wild Fires

Here is a good info for the case of wild fire in french: Le risque feu de forêt.

Oui, j'ai aussi remarqué cette habitude terrible lors de mes excursions dans le sud de la France. Nous dans le norde civilisé ne faisons pas ces actes polluant naturellement pas. Dans mon opinion l'un de peu points negatifs dans la provence.

My dear Nappy

This habit is indeed from the middle ages (like you ), that we also had in form of smog in big cities until the 70'es. We now got decent laws that prevents the slow killing of your neighbors and the world as such. Imagine the law suits we could have here! Bonfires are indeed a nuisance that should be forbidden worldwide.
